JOINT STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND MEMBERS OF THE MEDICINES CONTROL COUNCIL (MCC)

Health Minister, Dr Nkosazana Zuma, held a two-hour meeting with members of the Medicines Control Council this afternoon, to discuss the recommendations contained in the report on Medicines Regulatory System in South Africa.

During frank and open discussions, the Council agreed to the following:

• that the broad recommendations of the task team be accepted.
• that the Minister appoint a transitional task team drawn from the Medicines Control Council, the Department of Health and outside experts, to develop guidelines on the structure and functions of the proposed Medicines Regulatory Authority.

The Minister expressed her confidence in the members of the Medicines Control Council and requested that the Medicines Control Council continue functioning until the proposed Medicines Regulatory Authority is in place.
