MINISTER NZO VISITS KENYA

JOINT COMMUNIQUE ON THE OCCASION OF THE VISIT TO KENYA BY FOREIGN MINISTER ALFRED NZO, FROM 29 TO 31 MARCH 1998

1. At the invitation of the Government of Kenya, Hon. Alfred B. Nzo, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Africa paid a three day official visit to Kenya from 29 - 31 March, 1998.

2. During the visit Hon. Alfred Nzo, called on H.E. President Daniel T. Arap Moi and held discussions with Hon. Dr. Bonaya A. Godana, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. J. J. Kamotho, the Minister for Trade, Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, Minister for Education and Human Resource Development and Hon. Jackson Kalweo, Minister for Health.

3. In a warm and friendly atmosphere, Minister Nzo exchanged views with Hon. Dr. Bonaya A. Godana, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya on bilateral, regional and international issues.

4. The two Ministers reviewed bilateral co-operation between Kenya nd South Africa and noted that relations between the two countries in the economic, social and political spheres were strong. The two Ministers resolved to work towards the enhancement of these relations through commercial industrial and technological exchanges.

5. The two Ministers observed that co-operation between Kenya and South Africa will be enhanced with the conclusion of the Trade Agreement under consideration and agreed that the Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income and the protocol on Protection of Investment be concluded expeditiously.

6. The two Ministers examined the possibility of establishing a Joint Bilateral Commission to strengthen relations between Kenya nd South Africa, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the economic, scientific, technical and cultural fields.

7. The two Ministers acknowledged the role played by the two Governments in promoting peace and security on the continent, and in particular, commended efforts made by H.E. President Daniel T. Arap Moi and H.E. President Nelson Mandela in their search for a peaceful solution to the conflicts.

8. On Regional Economic Co-operation, the two Ministers underscored the importance of Regional Economic groups in promoting economic integration. They re-affirmed their countries' support and commitment to the strengthening of these bodies.

9. Hon. A.B. Nzo extended an invitation to Hon. Dr. Bonaya A. Godana to visit South Africa. The Minister accepted the invitation.

10. Alfred Nzo expressed his appreciation to his host, Hon. Dr. Bonaya A. Godana, the Government and the people of Kenya for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation throughout their stay in Kenya.
