MEDIA STATEMENT ON SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM PROMOTION AND FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATION IN MUMBAI
The South African Consulate General, Mumbai will be participating in the TAAI (Travel Agents Association of India) Travelogue Tourism Fair, scheduled to be held from March 36 - 29, 1998 in Mumbai. The Consulate General will coordinate a "Explore South African Pavilion" at the Fair. This event is supported by the South African Tourism Board, South African Airways and a large number of South African product suppliers. Several travel functionaries from the private sector, as well as Mr Sarel Opperman (SATOUR, General Manager: Asia, Australia & South America) will attend and participate. The mission will be the biggest international participant at the fair.
Travelogue is seen as the most influential trade fair of the Indian outbound travel industry and it gives South Africa an opportunity to promote both cultural and eco-tourism elements. The exhibition will be followed by a Seminar on Regional Tourism arranged by the Consulate General, creating a platform for Southern African countries to also showcase their tourism products. The Seminar will be followed by a series of tourism promotion and training Seminars in metropolitan cities in the mission's area. Outbound tourism from mumbai to South Africa has shown significant growth over the past two years. Extensive further growth in the high-spending and inceself in that market.
The "Explore South African Pavilion" is the first of a number of events arranged by the Consulate General in the run-up to the celebration of Freedom Day, which will culminate in performances in Mumbai and Bangalore by the Pro Musica Ensemble which comprises members of the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and the renowned South African tenor, Mr Trevor Kumalo. The Freedom Day celebrations will be accompanied by a presentation of South African wines and cheeses and launched under the joint auspices of the South African Consulate General and the Indo-South African Society in Mumbai.
