MEDIA STATEMENT ON ANNOUNCEMENT ON MR MAFOLE

It is with deep regret and great sadness that the Department of Foreign Affairs has to announce the untimely death of Mr Tebogo Mafole, Deputy Director-General who was responsible for the Americas and Europe. Mr Mafole passed away in a Pretoria hospital late during the evening of March 10 1998, after a short illness.

Mr Mafole joined the Department of Foreign Affairs as Deputy Director-General in 1995 after distinguished service as a senior member in the Department of International Affairs of the African National Congress (ANC). During his service to the ANC, he served as a representative at the United Nations and in Egypt. He also served as the resident foreign poicy specialist at the former headquarters of the ANC in Lusaka, Zambia

Following the 1994 elections, Mr Mafole took up a position as senior adviser in the Office of Deputy President Mbeki, before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Mafole will be fondly remembered for his sharp intellect, his keen wit, and his dedication to serving the Department of Foreign Affairs. He will be sorely missed.

Mr Mafole is survived by his wife, Ms Lyndall Shope-Mafole and their two children, Khotso and Sandile. He also leaves behind his mother, brother and sister.

The Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to Express its sincere condolences to the entire Mafole family.
