ZUMA MEETS MEDUNSA OVER UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Issued by: Department of Health

Pretoria - Government will continue to support Medunsa and its effort at training students from disadvantaged backgrounds, Minister of Health Nkosazana Zuma, told an emergency meeting held on Monday, 09 March 1998.

The minister convened the meeting against the background of media reports of a uncertainty over the future of Medunsa - which over the past 20 years has trained African medical graduates in significant numbers.

A task team, with representatives from the national Department of Health, the Gauteng Department of Health, Medunsa, the Education Department and the Northern Province Health Department, was set up to work through details of points of concern and draft a coherent strategy within the context of the continued existence of the medical university.

During today's meeting, Dr zuma re-affirmed the commitment of government to support Medunsa in continuing to train medical students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The task team will hold its first meeting before the end of the week to discuss solutions to end the dispute.
