MADIBA'S MESSAGE ON COMMONWEALTH DAY

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA ON THE OCCASION OF COMMONWEALTH DAY 1998 9 March 1998

The theme for this year's Commonwealth Day is sport which brings together people from all the different walks of life. Participants from all over the world interact with each other in a competitive spirit that is beneficial to the physical and psychological development of the various world societies.

Sport is an integral part in the process of nation building. As members of the Commonwealth we encourage international participation in physical activities and recreational sport to promote a healthy community life and to ensure social upliftment.

This year the best of South Africa's athletes will go to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 11-21 September 1998 to participate in the XVI Commonwealth Games - an exciting event that will unite athletes from across the Commonwealth.
