MEETING ON SA POLICY IN NORTH AFRICA AND MIDDLE EAST

MEDIA STATEMENT ON MEETING OF HEADS OF SOUTH AFRICAN DIPLOMATIC AND CONSULAR MISSIONS IN NORTH AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

Heads of South African Diplomatic and Consular missions in North Africa and the Middle East met in Amman, Jordan, on 8 and 9 March 1998 to exchange views on South Africa's policy on the region and to review South Africa's relations with the various countries concerned.

Following the meeting, which was chaired by the Acting director-general for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Thuthukile Mazibuko, and the Deputy Director for Africa, Mr Anthony Mongalo, the Heads of Mission went on to visit areas of Israel and Palestine in order to acquaint themselves at first hand with issues relating to the Middle East Peace Process. In the course of this visit, they received briefings from senior Palestinian and Israeli representatives and visited sites of significance to the Middle East Peace Process such as the Israeli settlement at Har Homa (Or Jebal abu Ghneim), Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.
