MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE JUDGEMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE ON ASPECTS OF THE LOCKERBIE CASE
South Africa welcomes the contents of the ruling on the Lockerbie affair by the International Court of Justice on 27 February 1998.
South Africa has always condemned terrorism in all its forms and wishes to see those who have caused the suffering surrounding the Lockerbie disaster brought to justice. South Africa therefore regards the ruling of the International Court of Justice as positive and a step forward towards a sensible and long overdue solution.
President Mandela has confirmed South Africa's support for the abrogation of sanctions that are daily causing hardship for the people of Libya. South Africa will continue its support for the League of Arab States and the Organisation of African Unity in this matter and it shares with other like-minded countries the hope that the ICJ's findings may herald the dawning of a new phase of progressive and mature diplomacy in the world.
