The Captain Lucas Radebe Bafana Bafana Ouagadougou Burkina Faso
Dear Lucas
In a note I sent you before you left for Burkina Faso I indicated that the country and I had the confidence that you would do well in the African Nations Cup. You have not disappointed.
Rarely does it happen that a sports team maintains the consistency you have shown, both as a team and individually. The game against the Democratic Republic of Congo reinforced your reputation as seasoned campaigners and accomplished professionals.
I am even more impressed by the manner your team conducted itself off the field. You have been true ambassadors of your country and your people.
In the same measure that South Africans are proud of you, I am certain that the people of Burkina Faso are delighted to have hosted a tournament that includes teams of Bafana-Bafana calibre.
You have performed like true heroes. We are all proud of you and are certain of victory in the next battle on Saturday.
Burkina Faso'98 has been a revelation of the depth of talent we have in South Africa. Once more, we pay tribute to the management and coaching staff, especially Jomo Sono, for the faith they have shown in your youth.
After Burkina Faso'98 it should be clear to every young South African footballer that with effort, the national team is beyond no one's reach.
I wish you luck on Saturday. You have it within your powers to lift the Cup once more!
Mayihlome!
