MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY, MR F S MUFAMADI, PRETORIA

ALLEGED ATTACK ON TWO MEMBERS OF THE PAKISTANI CRICKET TEAM

I noted with concern of the incident and regret the fact that it happened.

On behalf of the Department of Safety and Security and on my personal behalf I would like to convey my sincere apology to the United Cricket Board, the visiting team and the victims. The department for Safety and Security is committed to working jointly with the United Cricket Board to secure the test in South Africa.

I therefore requested the United Cricket Board to identify a person who will constantly liaise with the office of the Divisional Commissioner for the Crime Prevention and Response Services of the SAPS, Commissioner Andre Pruis on matters pertaining to the security of the test.

I have also directed the police to give me a written report outlining the circumstances in which the incident allegedly occurred. I urge all concerned to assist the police to get to the bottom of this.
