MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE STAND-OFF BETWEEN IRAQ AND THE US ON THE ISSUE OF WEAPONS INSPECTIONS
The South African Department of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern at the deepening rift between the Government of Iraq and the United Nations regarding the activities of the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM), a situation which represents a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
South Africa remains firm in its endorsement of all UN Security Council Resolutions pertaining to Iraq and supports the mandate given to UNSCOM, which it trusts will carry out its mandate unhindered and speedily, as well as with the necessary impartiality. To this end the South African Government called on all sides to spare no effort in finding solutions to the outstanding issues which still prevent the lifting of sanctions.
In calling for a diplomatic solution to the current impasse, the South African Government urged maximum restraint and appealed to all concerned to avoid language or actions which hold the potential for further exacerbating tensions in the region.
