Issued by: Ministry of Health
10 February 1998
Health Minister, Dr Nkosazana Zuma, has learnt with interest of a legal action by a member of the public against a cigarette company involving the dangers of smoking.
Dr Zuma maintains that Government should take the lead in protecting the public, particularly children, against all health hazards including the dangers of smoking.
For that reason her Department is working on amendments to the Tobacco Products Control Act designed primarily to protect and discourage children from smoking.
The Minister has also urged the public to contribute in whatever way possible in the campaign against smoking and assert their right to a smoke-free environment, for the benefit of all children and our nation's future.
Dr Zuma further hopes that the cigarette manufacturers will co-operate with Government in discharging its responsibility of creating an environment conducive to a healthy and productive lifestyle.
