MEDIA STATEMENT ON DONATION BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMATIC ASSOCIATION (SAIDA) TO WELFARE ORGANISATIONS
The President of the South African International Diplomatic Association (SAIDA), Mrs Regina Nzo, will make donations to two welfare organisations during the annual opening of parliament dinner for the Diplomatic Corps and members of Cabinet, at the Spier Estate, Stellenbosch, Cape on 7 February 1998.
During the dinner hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Alfred Nzo, Mrs Nzo will present cheques to Carehaven and The Homestead, in recognition of their work with disadvantaged communities.
Carehaven is a crisis centre established by the Salvation Army in 1990 to offer sanctuary to abused women and their children. It provides emergency accommodation, counselling, therapeutic programmes and life skills training and programmes for children who are also often victims of abuse.
The other project is The Homestead, which works with street children in Cape Town to help them build their shattered lives. The project includes outreach work, a drop-in centre, a shelter and a children's home.
The donations from part of a collective effort of SAIDA, a voluntary organisation formed in 1995 in an effort to increase cooperation between the Department of Foreign Affairs and the foreign diplomatic community based in South Africa.
