MUFAMADI STATEMENT ON LATEST ARRESTS

Issued by: Ministry for Safety and Security

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY, MR F S MUFAMADI, PRETORIA 5 FEBRUARY 1998

re: LATEST ARRESTS IN CONNECTION WITH HIGH PROFILE ROBBERIES OF CASH IN TRANSIT

I have noted the latest arrest of Mr Oupa Seane and two other suspects allegedly involved in the robbery of cash-in-transit which was committed last year in Bronkhorstspruit.

Mr Seane and five other suspects escaped from lawful custody in Pretoria central Prison on 5 December 1997 after their original arrest. This they did in the vain hope that they would evade the law forever.

So far three of the fugitives have been rearrested and they have started absorbing the lesson of the futility of escaping from lawful custody.

I wish to congratulate the members of the SA Police Service involved in the arrests.

We have told the public soon after the escape of the six suspects last year, that the SA Police Service would catch them wherever they were, and that it was a futile exercise for them to have even tried to evade the law, since this added more charges against them.

The three fugitives that are still at large (Dennis Ngobese, Collin Chauke and Abdul Kafoor Kalla) must be informed that no place they can go to is beyond our reach.
