The Cabinet held its scheduled fortnightly meeting this morning, meeting for the first time this year in Tuynhuys, Cape Town.
Apart from receiving a briefing on the budgetary process as is customary for this period of the year and being presented with a short report on some of the main relevant issues that arose at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, the Cabinet dealt mainly with reports from the Cabinet Committees.
The Cabinet approved the National Road Traffic Amendment Bill for submission to Parliament, and resolved to request Parliament to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination as well as the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights.
The Cabinet approved the hosting of the XIX International Vitamin A Consultative Group Meeting by the Minister of Health in South Africa during 1999, and received progress reports on preparations for the Africa Telecom '98 Exhibition and Forum and for the Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement later this year.
The Cabinet approved certain measures to effect the incorporation of the functions of the affiliate company Renewable Energy for South Africa (REFSA) into the Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs.
