MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE PASSING AWAY OF SOUTH AFRICA'S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO GHANA

It is with great sorrow that the Department of Foreign Affairs announces the passing away of Mr Godfrey Josiah Motsepe, South Africa's High Commissioner to Accra, Ghana, Mr Motsepe died on 28 January 1998 at the Pretoria East Hospital, after a short illness.

Mr Motsepe was born on 14 March 1942 at Marabastad, Pretoria. He taught at Broederstroom Primary and the Catholic Primary School in Atteridgeville, as well as at Chingwele Primary School in Lusaka, Zambia.

From 1980 to 1990 Mr Motsepe served as ANC Chief Representative in Algeria, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Ethopia. He returned to South Africa in 1991 after spending twenty-eight years in exile.

Mr Motsepe joined the Department of Foreign Affairs on 3 November 1995 and served in the Multilateral Branch until his appointment as High Commissioner to Accra, Ghana on 3 January 1997.

Mr Motsepe is survived by two daughters, Jacquelene Moepeng and Tamara Nkapi, a son, Manase Modikeng Joseph and a grandchild, Modichaba Masebelanga.
