WHITE PAPER AND OPTIONS FOR METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT

Issued by: Ministry for Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development

STATEMENT BY MR M V MOOSA, MINISTER FOR PROVINCIAL AFFAIRS AND CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT WHITE PAPER AND OPTIONS FOR METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT

The current speculation regarding options for metropolitan government contained in the Local Government White Paper is premature, and any suggestion that the White Paper has been finalised is misleading.

Whilst there is general consensus amongst stakeholders that metropolitan government needs to be enabled to play an effective role in co-ordinating metropolitan development and ensuring equity, the detailed mechanisms for this are yet to be finalised. Any speculation on the details of the White Paper based on any single consultation that has taken place should be regarded as just that.

Cabinet will consider the White Paper during February 1998, and the document will be launched publicly in early March 1998.
