OFFICIAL VISIT BY MINISTER OF TRANSPORT MAC MAHARAJ VISIT TO ITALY 26 - 30 JANUARY 1998
The Minister of Transport, Mr Mac Maharaj, will visit Italy from 26 to 30 January to sign a transport agreement with his Italian counterpart, the Minister of Transport and Shipping, Mr Claudio Burlando.
The agreement is the culmination of negotiations in July 1997 in Pretoria between the transport authorities of South Africa and Italy with a view to establishing cooperation in the field of transport between the two countries.
It promotes cooperation in the field of public transport and the strengthening of technological and exchanges in this sector, with special reference to rail transport. The focus will be on strategic planning to optimise productivity and logistical planning to increase operational efficiency. The agreement is scheduled to be signed on Tuesday 27 January 1998 in Rome.
Minister Maharaj will have meetings with executives of the Italian Railway Company as well as the Town Councillor for Transport and Deputy Mayor of the City of Rome on urban transport issues.
He will also meet with Rome's airport authority, Aeroporti di Roma, who have been shortlisted in the privatisation of the Airports Company South Africa, of which Minister Maharaj is the shareholding minister.
