DEPUTY PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI TO VISIT UGANDA

Deputy President Thabo Mbeki departs for the Republic of Uganda on 23 January 1998 where he will attend the Leaders Forum of Heads of States and Government hosted by President Museveni an the World Bank.

The objective of the Leaders Forum is to gain consensus on a vision for the future of Africa and develop strategies to attract investment to the continent.

In this regard the following themes will be discussed;

• regional integration and trade;
• investment in infrastructure;
• building of human resources;
• maintenance of public resource flows;
• conflict management and resolution and
• post conflict reconstruction.

It is expected that the following Heads of State/Government will attend: L. Kabila (Democratic Republic of Congo), B. Mkapa (Tanzania), P. Bizimungu (Rwanda), I. Afwerki (Eritrea), M. Zenawi (Ethiopia), F. Chiluba (Zambia), J Chissano (Mozambique), A. Diouf (Senegal), K. Masire (Botswana), D. Arap Moi (Kenya), R. Mugabe (Zimbabwe).

It is expected that Deputy President Mbeki will return to South Africa on Saturday 24 January 1998.
