ELECTION OF THE NEW PREMIER FOR GAUTENG

Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will elect a new Gauteng Premier on Monday, 19 January 1998. Soon after the election, which will take place at the Legislature at 10h30, the new premier will be sworn in by a Constitutional Court judge at an open-air function held at the Johannesburg City Library Gardens. Members of the public are invited to swearing-in ceremony.

The election of the new Premier follows the resignation of Premier Tokyo Sexwale last year. Premier Sexwale, who will vacate his post on Monday, will be joining the private sector in the immediate.

The swearing-in of the new Premier will be followed by entertainment. Entertainment will be provided by the well-known local musicians, including Jonas Gwangwa, Tshepo Tshola, and Rebecca Malope and Pure Magic. (A draft programme of the day's events has been attached for your convenience)

In the event of rain, the swearing-in process will take place at the Johannesburg City Hall.
