LAW ENFORCEMENT AND AWARENESS MAJOR DRIVE OF ARRIVE ALIVE CAMPAIGN OVER THE NEXT MONTH

Law enforcement of the Arrive Alive campaign has heightened the South African public's awareness of the consequences of not obeying the rules of the road. Over one million notices have been issued to road traffic offenders to date of which 70% were for speed, seat belts and alcohol, the three main contributory factors to the high death toll on our roads - the focus of the campaign.

A total of 89 826 notices issued were for seat belts, 631 167 for speed and 4754 for alcohol. The majority of speeding fines were issued in Gauteng - 311 816 - followed by KwaZulu Natal with 117 385 fines and 69 269 for Western Cape.

Of the notices issued for seat belts nationally, Gauteng road traffic offenders contribute 36 344, KwaZulu Natal 11 443 and Western Cape 16 114. KwaZulu Natal had the most notices issued for alcohol at 1371, while Western Cape and Gauteng had 1216 and 1212 notices issued respectively.

The next three top offences nationally are: ignoring road signs (65 080), unroadworthy vehicles (59 322) and unlicensed drivers (33 826).

The national death toll is currently standing at 913 and law enforcers across the country will continue with their law enforcement activities to try to keep this figure from climbing even higher. Comments Minister Mac Maharaj, "The Arrive Alive Campaign has demonstrated that road traffic offenders will no longer be tolerated in South Africa. The one million people that have been ticketed represent only a minor portion of people who have been stopped by traffic officials checking for seat belts, alcohol, licences over the campaign. This has created a much greater awareness on our roads of the importance of road safety and obeying the rules of the roads".
