STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR WELFARE AND POPULATION DEVELOPMENT ON THE PAYMENT OF EASTERN CAPE BENEFICIARIES OF SOCIAL SECURITY
Progress has been made in the wide-ranging consultations that I have had with the Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel, the Premier of the Eastern Cape Makhenkesi Stofile and the MEC Mandisa Marasha.
As a result, I want to confirm that the Eastern Cape beneficiaries will be paid this month (January). The exact date on which these payments will be made will be announced at a news conference on Wednesday. This is because a few issues still have to be finalised.
At Wednesday's news conference a comprehensive range of other measures will also be unveiled to address the present crisis. I wish to reassure all beneficiaries that the government is determined to address their situation as speedily as is possible. The right to social security is protected under the constitution and I am committed to meeting our statutory obligations.
