MEDIA RELEASE 8 JANUARY 1998

REGULATIONS CONCERNING BY-ELECTION

As a result of changes in regulations with regard to by-elections, the by-election in Ward 36 has been postponed. The new date is 14 May 1998.

The new regulations issued by Constitutional Development Minister Valli Moosa were gazetted in Government Gazette No 6063 of 19 December 1997. These new regulations require that not only the voters' roll of the ward that has a vacancy be updated but also the entire municipal voters' roll may stand as a candidate. It also allows for the registration of people who have turned 18, who moved into the Southern Metropolitan Local Council and who did not have an opportunity to register in 1995.

It must be noted, however, that only people living in the ward with a vacancy may vote in the by-election to fill such a vacancy. Ward 36 is made up of the suburbs of Roseacre, Regent's Park, The Hill, Moffat Park, Linmeyer, Rosettenville, Townsview and Oakdene.

Any person wanting to confirm his or her details on the certified 1995 voters' roll can telephone the following numbers: (011) 407-6762; 407-6764 between 7am and 16h30 on weekdays.
