MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW SOUTH AFRICAN HIGH COMMISSIONER TO THE UNITED KINGDOM

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Alfred Nzo, today announced the appointment by President Mandela of Ms Cheryl Ann Carolus as South Africa's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has the honour to confirm that Her Majesty The Queen has graciously given agrement to the appointment of Ms Cheryl Carolus.

Ms Cheryl Carolus (39) started her career in 1979 as a secondary school teacher. In 1983 she took up the post of full-time Provincial Secretary of the UDF Western Cape, and in 1985 she became UDF National Coordinator. In 1990 she joined the University of Western Cape as Education Resources and Information Project Staff Development Officer. In 1991 she was elected full-time member of the ANC National Executive Committee and Head of the Human Development Department of the National Working Committee. Ms Carolus became the NEC Coordinator of ANC policy in 1992 and in 1994 she was elected Deputy Secretary General of the ANC. She became Acting Secretary General of the ANC in 1997.

Ms Carolus hold BA (Law) and BA (Education) degrees from the University of the Western Cape. She is married.

Miss Carolus will be assuming her post early in the new year.
