Dr Patel's term of office as Director-General of the Department of Welfare and Population Development will terminate on 7 January 1998.
During the two years Dr Patel has dedicated herself to the proper establishment of the Welfare function and putting into place an equitable Social Security System. She has laid a solid base for the transformation process.
As Minister of Welfare and Population Development, I have sincere appreciation for the commitment shown by Dr Patel, the contributions and personal sacrifices which she has made. I trust that her knowledge and experience will not be lost to the welfare sector.
Unfortunately, differences have arisen between Dr Patel and myself regarding our respective roles. Dr Patel and myself have therefore agreed that in the interest of good governance her contract of employment be redetermined to expire 7 January 1998.
I have no doubt that Dr Patel will continue to serve the Department in another capacity.
I wish Dr Patel all the best for the future.
