Dear Mr Van Schalkwyk
I wish to thank you for the letter you wrote to the President today in which you ask him to address the crime situation in the country.
The President has asked the Minister of Safety and Security, Mr Sydney Mufamadi to arrange a briefing for you on the measures that are being taken to combat crime in the country, including the rural areas. As you will appreciate from such a briefing, a great measure of success is being registered by the law-enforcement agencies.
President Mandela appreciates the significance you attach to Christmas and the need for safety and security around this period. He wishes to assure you that government is seized with this matter throughout the course of the year, including the coming festive season.
