ACCUSATIONS OF INTERFERING WITH THE JUDICIAL PROCESS

The Miistry confirms that a letter was received late yesterday requesting that the Minister for Safety and Security, Mr F.S. Mufamadi, undertake not to make contact with Mr Matjeni without the prior consent of Mr Matjeni's legal representative.

This undertaking was given on the specific understanding that the Minister is not admitting to any o the allegaions.

The meeting with Mr Matjeni was purely co-incidenal ad took place during a visit to the Pretoria Central Prison as part of the process of acquainting himself with the circumstances relating to escapes from police custody. At no stage did any discussion relating to pending cases take place with any of the awaiting trial prisoners and this was also the case with regard to Mr Matjeni.
