A major summit of all Gauteng youth organisations - designed to contribute to the formulation of South Africa's first national youth policy - kicks off in Broederstroom tomorrow. The Summit - to be held at Broederstroom's Alpha Centre from Friday to Sunday - is convened jointly by the National Youth Commission (NYC). Gauteng Youth Directorate and the Gauteng Petitions & Public Participation Committee and forms part of the national consultation process facilitated by the National Youth Commission (NYC) in support of the youth policy process.
Confirmed to attend are the youth wings of all major political parties, as well as representatives of provincial government and youth cultural and service organisations. The opening day's programme includes a keynote address by Gauteng Premier Tokyo Sexwale, as well as inputs from the Gauteng Youth Directorate and the NYC.
TheGauteng summit comes after a series of youth hearings in the province, which drew inputs from youth not necessarily belonging to formal organisations, particularly those in rural areas. These concerns and ideas have been captured in a provincial situational analysis which will be presented for consideration of formal delegates. To date, more than 30 provincial hearings and summits have already taken place throughout the nine provinces.
Spokesperson for the NYC, Paul Johnson, said the organisation was well on track in terms of the planned policy formulation schedule. "The consultation process is proceeding according to plan - successful completion of the Gauteng Summit will take us decisively into the last phase of the process," said Johnson. The NYC indicated in its recent report to President Mandela that it is operating on a self-imposed deadline of December for development of the first draft of a comprehensive policy proposal. A detailed programme for the summit is attached.
