PLATINUM TOLL HIGHWAY INVITATION

Issued by: Department of Transport

THE PLATINUM TOLL HIGHWAY INVITATION

The Minister of Transport Mac Maharaj will announce the names of the three consortia which qualified to tender for the Platinum Toll Highway at a press briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday 28 October 1997.

The Platinum Toll Highway, a R3 billion project which involves a portion of the N4 between Pta and SA/Botswana border and N1 between Pta and Warmbath, is the third major build, operate and transfer (BOT) road project launched by the Department of Transport in the past year.

Project Manager Neil Tolmie will provide the media with a short briefing on the road and development corridor it will open up from eastern to the western shores of Southern Africa.

At the briefing, Minister Maharaj will also release the SA Roads Board's policy document for dealing with unsolicited proposals by the private sector for the provision of infrastructure. Minister Maharaj's announcement that his Department would, for the first time, accept unsolicited proposals has created intense interest, as it formally opens the door to new and innovative ideas from the private sector for development.

The minister will also provide an update on the development status of the Wild Coast SDI.

I, therefore take this opportunity to invite you to this brief session.
