POPCRU AGAINST NEW MEDICAL AID SCHEME OF THE SAPS

Issued by: SAPS Human Resources Management Comm Service

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE POLMED FUND MANAGER, DIRECTOR EDDIE BOERSEMA, NATIONAL HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

PRETORIA, 14 OCTOBER 1997

(Statement regarding proest by POPCRU against new medical aid scheme of the SAPS) (Their statement dated 13 October 1997 to all media correspondents refers)

SAPS Management has become aware of the accusation by POPCRU that SAPS Management are avoiding their input and participation in medical aid scheme matters.

The SAPS Management would like to comment as follows:

All employee organisations are represented in the National Negotiation Forum (NNF) where all medical issues are negotiated in the POLMED Committee, specifically formed for this purpose.

This is the forum where employee organisations has the opportunity to give their input as well as to debate decisions forwarded by the National Medical Management Board (NMMB). No decision with regard to the service conditions of members will be implemented without being negotiated in the NNF with the employee organisations from which they occasionally walk out.

Management are not avoiding to resolve medical issues with the employee organisations. If this ws the case they would not have converted the workshop on medical issues with the employee organisations on 7 and 8 October, which the employee organisations again terminated by walking out.

Management are not surprised that the employee organisations would like to be part of the NMMB. The NMMB have been responsible for curtaining expenditure for the Medical Aid Scheme POLMED, which results into millions. It is understandable that the employee organisations would like to be in a position to claim these successes.

The SAPS Management are glad to see that POPCRU are calling for a meeting with the SAPS Management on medical aid issues for it is clear in the agenda points stipulated by them - which all are not factually correct - that they are not fully informed on all medical issues.
