MEDIA RELEASE BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE REGARDING THE RECOGNITION OF FOREIGN LEGAL QUALIFICATIONS AND PRACTICE ACT, 1993
The Department of Justice hereby announces that the President, Mr N R Mandela has approved a fourth and final extension of the period of operation of the Recognition of Foreign Legal Qualifications and Practice Act, 1993 (Act 114 of 1993). The period has been extended for a further 6 (six) months with effect from 1 October 1997.
The main object of this Act is to provide for the Minister of Justice that he may, on the recommendation of a panel of experts, recognise certain foreign legal qualifications for purposes of admission to practice as advocates and attorneys in the Republic and to grant exemption from certain requirements contained in the Admissions of Advocates Act, 1964 (Act 74 of 1964) and the Attorneys Act, 1979 (Act 53 of 1979).
The Department of Justice therefore appeal to all possible applicants to make sure that they hand in their applications well before 31 March 1998, as this is the final cut-off date. After this date it will not be possible to consider any applicants.
