ALGERIAN DEPUTY MINISTER TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA

MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE VISIT OF THE ALGERIAN DEPUTY MINISTER OF COOPERATION AND MAGHREBIEN AFFAIRS, MR LAHCENE MOUSSAOUI FROM 7-11 SEPTEMBER 1997

The Algerian Deputy Minister of Cooperation and Maghrebien Affairs, Mr Lahcene Moussaoui, will visit South Africa from 7 to 11 September 1997, at the invitation of Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad.

Minister Moussaoui will be accompanied by a delegation of senior Algerian officials, who will conduct bilateral discussions with several South African line function Departments. These will include the Departments of Transport; Arts, Culture, Science and Technology; Agriculture and the South African Revenue Service. The Minister's Diplomatic Counsellor, Mr Mahrez will hand over two proposed cooperation projects to the Department of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, as well as to the Department of Sport and Recreation. The bilateral discussions will focus on the expansion and facilitation of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Deputy Minister Moussaoui and his delegation will also make familiarization visits to the South African Mint, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as well as the Council for Geoscience. Deputy Minister Moussaoui and his delegation will also meet with representatives of Business South Africa and the South African Foreign Trade Organisation.

Deputy Ministers Pahad and Moussaoui will meet on Monday 8 September and Wednesday 10 September 1997, for bilateral discussions. During the course of his visit, Mr Moussaoui will also have discussions with Ministers Kader Asmal and Mac Maharaj.
