INVESTIGATION OF CERTAIN INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE

Issued by: Ministry of Justice

PRESS RELEASE BY DR A M OMAR, MINISTER OF JUSTICE, ON THE INVESTIGATION OF CERTAIN INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE IN KWAZULU NATAL

My attention has been drawn to demonstrations by women in Pietermaritzburg protesting against the failure of the police to arrest a certain individual or individuals, arising from incidents of violence.

I have communicated with the Attorney General to inform him that Government has no intention of interfering with his own investigation or that of the police in connection with this matter. The police must be allowed to complete their investigations. Precipitated action is uncalled for as it may adversely affect police investigations. Justice must take its normal course without interference. Absence of political interference is the only guarantee that justice is being done. and can say that this is also the attitude of the ANC.

I appeal to all parties concerned to avoid political interference.

I appreciate the concerns of women and the rest of the law abiding community in KwaZulu Natal and can give them the assurance that the law enforcement authorities are giving their full attention to investigations and possible prosecutions. I thank the community and especially the women for their patience.
