MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SA POLICE SERVICE - Pretoria: 1997-09-02
The South African Police Service will be joining in the spirit of Arbor Week 1997 by holding tree-planting ceremonies throughout the country. Trees of remembrance will be planted in honour of our colleagues who have made the highest sacrifice in the fight against crime - that of their lives.
The top management of the SAPS will be planting trees in memory of our fallen colleagues in each Province, starting at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. At 11:30 on Friday, 5 September 1997 Commissioner George Fivaz, Mr Meyer Kahn and Mr Azhar Cachalia will be planting trees at the SAPS Memorial, Union Buildings, Pretoria.
At 14:00 on the same day the Minister for Safety and Security - Mr Sydney Mufamadi, Commissioner Fivaz, Mr Kahn and the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Sharma Maharaj, will be planting trees at the Jabulani Police Station, Soweto.
The South African Police Service would like to invite the family and friends of police members who have died in the course of their duties, as well as other members of the community, to attend these ceremonies.
We would also like to thank Mr Keith Kirsten, Total and Nedbank for the kind donation of ten thousand trees to be planted around the country.
