MEDIA RELEASE BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF REGIONAL OFFICES:
The Department of Justice underwent a transformation and rationalisation process during the last year and part of this restructuring programme was the establishment of Regional Offices. These Regional Offices will serve as the execution agencies with the purpose of facilitation and actualisation of the programmes of the national component - the Department of Justice, These offices will be the vehicles which will be utilised to transport the programmes of the national component to the proximity of the communities in terms of implementation and the management of such programmes. The Regional Offices will be empowered to create the capacity at all the Department's sub-offices to promote the ideal of governance through the participation of communities in the administration of justice.
Nine Regional Offices are envisaged:
These offices will be headed by nine provincial heads of offices who will be referred to as "Regional Heads".
Due to logistical arrangements, the Department will implement these offices in phases.
The following two offices will become operational on 1 September 1997: Eastern Cape and North West. Their particulars are:

Information with regard to the dates on which the other Regional Offices will become operational, will be distributed with their particulars as soon as it becomes available. It is envisaged that three more offices will become operational on 1 October 1997, namely Western Cape, Gauteng and Free State.
