MINISTRY OF JUSTICE ON CAPE ARGUS REPORT

Issued by: Ministry of Justice

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE, DR A M OMAR MP, WITH REGARD TO A REPORT IN THE CAPE ARGUS TODAY, 21ST AUGUST 1997, WITH THE HEADING "ANARCHY LOOMS IN OUR COURTS

I have read the report in the Argus of 21 August appearing under the name of Lindsay Barnes.

I am aware of the pressures which would be put on Regional Courts if they were required to hear bail applications for serious matters. The process of filling vacant posts is being addressed as a matter of urgency. That is a genuine concern.

The over-emphasis by some Magistrates and Prosecutors on the question of salaries is regrettable. To me it is a question of loyalty and commitment to justice which is at stake. Whilst salaries is important, it is often a smokescreen. During the apartheid years the same Prosecutors and Magistrates worked themselves to death out of loyalty to apartheid.

They know that the issue of salaries is being addressed. Insofar as the Department is concerned, they will be judged on their performance. At the same time many Magistrates and Prosecutors perform excellent service for which we express appreciation.
