INDUSTRIAL ACTION IN GAUTENG HEALTH INSTITUTIONS

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

The current industrial action in the public institutions has affected 10% of Gauteng Public Health institutions. These institutions have reported that some of their staff were intimidated and that to some degree services were disrupted.

The Department's Directorate of Labour Relations is presently investigating this information and the extent of the problems caused. Should the investigation confirm any act of misconduct, the department will be obliged to take decisive and appropriate measures against those implicated.

The Department wishes to reiterate that it respects the workers' right to engage in protected/legal industrial action. However, irresponsible acts which infringe on patients' rights to care and which undermines other employees' right to Freedom of Association must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

The Department urgently appeals to those who are involved in the current industrial action to act responsibly in the spirit of the recognition agreements, New Labour Relations Act, and the Constitution of the country.

Workers' rights at health institutions should not be considered in isolation from those of patients.
