JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE SA POLICE SERVICE / MEDIHELP AND MEDSCHEME
Pretoria: 1997-07-25
The tender for the administration of the South African Police Service's medical aid scheme, Polmed, has been awarded to Medscheme by the State Tender Board.
Medscheme was one of a number of medical aid administrators which tendered for this contract of five years and will take over from the current administrator, Medihelp.
Medscheme has 22 offices countrywide with more than 2700 staff members to assist in the administration of medical aid schemes. Medscheme is geared to deal with more than two million beneficiaries.
As the handing-over of the administration of Polmed is a mammoth undertaking, Medihelp has undertaken to assist Medscheme during this interim phase.
Should Medihelp decide that due to the termination of this contract, involving over 300 000 beneficiaries, certain members of their staff might have to be retrenched, Medscheme has indicated that they will consider hiring the above mentioned staff members.
All medical claims from members of Polmed and service providers must still be submitted to Medihelp until further notice.
The South African Police Service would like to emphasise that the fact that the tender was awarded to an administrator other than Medihelp does not in any way detract from the quality of service or relations between Medihelp and the SAPS.
