MEDIA STATEMENT BY MINISTER M V MOOSA, MINISTER FOR PROVINCIAL AFFAIRS AND CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Report of the Commission of Enquiry into the Taung/Kudumance border Dispute was presented to the President on 3 July 1997.

The Minister for Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development, Mr MV Moosa, and the Premiers of the Northern Cape and North West Provinces discussed the contents of the Report on 1 July 1997 in Kimberley.

The findings of the Commission were as follows:

- the unanimous rejection of the wholesale incorporation of the Kudumane and Taung districts into the Northern Cape.

- that the municipalities of Kuruman and Mothibistadt on the one hand and Hartswater and Pampierstad on the other hand be united. Once unification is achieved these areas should form part of the Northern Cape Province, and

- that certain processes be established by government to effectively test the will of the residents in the other areas concerned.

The Commission's Report does not constitute a decision. It is a document that will assist the two provinces, North West and Northern Cape, in their search for solutions and agreements.

The Report is currently being studied and Government has not taken a position on the recommendations as yet.

Issued by John Mentoor, Department of Constitutional Development. The Report can be obtained from him at telephone numbers (012) 341-2400/0825772956.
