5 June 1997
The Gauteng Legislature Standing Committee on Petitions and Public Participation will hold Public Hearings on Monday, 9 June, Tuesday, 10 June and Thursday, 12 June 1997, to solicit public input on the renaming of police stations in the province.
Of the 169 police stations and satellite stations in the Gauteng province, three are named after individuals, specifically politicians and a former senior police officer, while the rest are named after their respective areas of geographic location.
Following a request from the Department of Safety and Security, the Committee will conduct hearings at the John Vorster Square police station in the Uniform building Officers' Club on the 7th floor, from 09H00 to 13H00, on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Committee will proceed to General Johann Coetzee police station along Main road in Newlands, Johannesburg, in the Lecture Room on the second floor, from 09H00 to 13H00. In Pretoria, the Committee will hear public submissions on the Adrian Vlok police station at the Centurion Library Auditorium, at corner Cantonment road and Unielane, on Wednesday from 10H00 to 13H00.
In terms of the provincial ordinance, the MEC for Public Safety and Security has the right and authority to change the name of any police station or satellite station, by proclamation. In response to numerous public requests, the above three police stations were identified by the Department in order to determine Cabinet policy and procedure for their name change. The Standing Committee, which represents 7 political parties, is unanimously agreed that the names of the three police stations be changed, after a process of open and formal public consultation.
The Committee will gather evidence and make suitable and representative policy recommendations to the provincial Department of Safety and Security.
All sessions of the hearings are open to the media. For interviews and more information, the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Petitions and Public Participation, Mr Vusi Mavuso, may be contacted on (011) 498-5644, or 082 555 1298.
