PRESS CONFERENCE ON CCMA ANNUAL REPORT

You are invited to a press conference at 14h00 on Thursday 5 June at the Ngwenyama auditorium (the small auditorium) at 120 Plein Street in Cape town where the work of the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) will be reviewed. Minister of Labour Tito Mboweni and CCMA director Charles Nupen will be at the press conference to review the CCMA's work and to answer your questions.

The CCMA is an important pillar in the new Labour Relations Act which began to operate in November last year. This Act set in place a new framework and procedures for improved organisational and negotiation rights for trade unions and employer organisations as part of the Labour Ministry's drive to democratise the workplace and encourage joint decision-making between workers and employers.

The CCMA offers an effective, speedy and efficient mechanism to resolve workrelated disputes and also plays an important role in preventing disputes. So far, the CCMA has resolved about 80 per cent of the disputes referred to it. Its first dispute, involving an employee in the agriculture sector in the Eastern Cape, was settled less than two days after it arose.
