VISIT BY PORTUGUESE SECRETARY OF STATE

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY DR J LAMEGO, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION, FROM PORTUGAL

Dr Jose Lamego, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Development cooperation has arrived in South Africa on 21 May 1997 for a working visit, at the invitation of the Deputy-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Aziz Pahad. Dr Lamego will return to Portugal on 23 May 1997.

During his visit Dr Lamego will hold discussions on bilateral relations between South Africa and Portugal, issues regarding Southern Africa and the SADC with the view to possible cooperation, as well as the status of EU/ACP/South Africa relation. The Cahora Bassa hydroelectric scheme in Mozambique will also be discussed.

Dr Lamego will meet with, inter alia, Prof. K Asmal, Minister for Water Affairs and Forestry as well as the Ms S Shabangu, Deputy Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs.

Dr Lamego and Mr SR Maharaj, Minister of Transport, will also sign the Service Agreement during his visit.

Dr Lamego is being accompanied by a seven member delegation from Portugal.
