CABINET MEETING - 14 MAY 1997

The Cabinet held its regular fortnightly meeting in Good Hope Chamber, Cape Town. The meeting, chaired by the Acting President Chief MG Buthelezi, considered in the main the reports from the Cabinet Committees.

The Cabinet received a report on the new Budget process, based on the introduction of a Medium Term Expenditure Framework and indicative allocations to Provincial and National Governments and endorsed the new Budget process.

The Cabinet received a report that the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism had prepared the White Paper - A Marine Fisheries Policy for South Africa and approved the policies contained in the White Paper.

The Cabinet considered a number of Bills and approved their submission to Parliament during the current session. These Bills are:

1. Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Bill, 1997 2. Identification Bill, 1997 3. The Extension of Marriage Act, 1961 to the Whole of the Republic of South Africa Bill, 1997 4. South African Citizenship Amendment Bill, 1997 5. Land Restitution and Reform Laws Amendment Bill, 1997 6. Provision of Certain Land Amendment Bill, 1997 7. Criminal Law Amendment Bill, 1997 8. National Research Foundation Bill, 1997 9. National Land Transport Bill, 1997 10. Cross-Border Road Transport Bill, 1997.
