CLARIFICATION ON MMF WHITE PAPER

Issued by: Ministry of Transport

There appears to be confusion in some reports about the revised MMF White Paper launched by the Ministry of Transport in Cape Town yesterday.

The cap of R4000 per month is NOT on earnings but compensation. The proposed benefits in the revised White Paper are for all road users irrespective of their income. This means that the maximum amount payable in compensation for loss of earnings is R4000 - irrespective of how much the injured party earned prior to the accident. The figure of R4000 was arrived at from statistics of the Inland Revenue Services that showed that only 12,5% of South Africans earned in excess of R4000 per month in 1992/3.
