The Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture is hosting the 27th April 1997 freedom day celebration in the Vaal Region.
Objectives:
- To hold an 8 hours festival at Vereeniging Rugby stadium on the 27th April 1997. - To bridge the gap that exists between black and white communities. - To build in individuals a sense of accepting what has been the course of our history and ensure the common healing process and identify by sharing dances and songs in a festival. - To use the Arts to capture the 1960 - 1997 events in the Vaal. - To attract youth and adults on National days to a central venue and provide a platform for individuals and communities to express their feelings, thoughts and concerns. - To create the awareness about the process undertaken towards the formulation of the constitution and its signing.
The festival will feature the local groups of:
Dances - varying from Modern, African; Jazz and Zulu traditional dances. Musical bands - varying from African Jazz; Traditional and Kwaito music. Choral - varying from Traditional; Choral music notes. The workshops are held to create a Festival Mass Choir and Bands. There will also be Praise poets or the Imbongi.
The groups come from Ratanda; Vereeniging; Sebokeng; Sharpville; Bophelong; Vanderbijlpark and Ennerdale.

The Directorate of Community Arts Vaal calls on all the potential members of the community to seize their opportunity and form part of the Freedom day celebration.
It is the wish of the National Ministers office that we all stress the theme of the day 27th April that is "UNITY PEACE PROSPERITY".
