DRAFT PROGRAMME AND MEDIA ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE NATIONAL FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATIONS, UPINGTON, 27 APRIL 1997

Programme at Danie Kuys Stadium

07:00 Various local artists to perform 09:40 Ecumenical church service by Prof Piet Meiring 10:15 De Aar Choral Society 10:25 The Master of Ceremonies, Mr F Gaopalangwe to welcome and brief all guests 10:30 March to start at gates of stadium 10:50 SANDF to brief guests 10:59 President NR Mandela and General Romano to take the National Salute - Flypast by SA Airforce - 21-gun salute 11:06 The Premier of the Northern Cape, Mr EM Dipico, to welcome President NR Mandela 11:10 Name praise singer 11:13 President NR Mandela to deliver his National Day address 11:45 National Anthem by Mass Choir and the SANDF band 11:55 Four Inter-denominational prayers - Prof P Meiring (Christian faith) - Prof Joshi (Hindu faith) - Sheik Davids (Muslim faith) - Mr S Kopelowutz (Jewish faith) 12:05 Provincial messages to be presented to Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Mr Mtshali 12:15 Torch of unity to be lit by Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology 12:17 President NR Mandela to present the New Constitution to the Upington 14 12:23 President NR Mandela to unveil bronze plaque 12:30 Various artists to perform for the rest of the day.

Media: All media with valid press cards and ID / Passport documents are welcome to attend the events at the Danie Kuys Stadium, Upington.

All media are requested to meet Xanderie van der Watt at the media scaffolding not later than 9:20 where special accreditation will be issued to bona fide journalists. Due to strict security measures, all media will be searched / screened.

One fixed media position for TV-crews and still photographers, TV-cameramen and stills photographers are advised to bring step-ladders. Stills photographers are advised to carry long lenses. No flashlights or direct television lights will be allowed.

Seating for print media will be provided in front of the media scaffolding.

No roaming will be allowed outside the demarcated area.

Sufficient parking will be provided to all media representatives travelling to Upington with their own transport, in the parking area outside the Danie Kuys Stadium.

Due to the travelling distance to Upington, provision has been made for a pool of 15 media representatives in total to be flown on chartered flights from either Johannesburg or Cape Town.
