MEC ON THE DP CALL FOR THE AUDITOR GENERAL

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

03 April 1997

The MEC for Public Safety and Security Ms. Jessie Duarte, would welcome the Auditor General to look into the delays regarding the construction of police stations in Alexander, Diepkloof, Orange Farm and Eldorado Park.

"The sooner the matter is looked into the better. We are hopeful that when the matter is looked into, it will alleviate the delay of projects emanating from the bureaucracy inherited from the past which has been extremely insensitive to the needs of the communities." The MEC said.

The exorbitant price of R1,9 million rands put forward by land developers for the building site in Alexander is also a matter of great concern which inhibits the process of construction in a needy area which has levels of crime that need to be drastically dealt with.

The apparent sudden concern by the DP about the building of the police station in Alexander and other previously disadvantaged areas when in the past these were not even considered as priority is an example of extreme hypocrisy.

The process of building police stations has been identified following consultations with most of the role players in the given areas so that the interests and sensitivities of the communities are taken into cognisance.

"There is a need to provide these police stations as quickly as possible and make them accessible and well - equipped. Yet this had to be done through thorough planning and avoiding to evict people particularly in a congested area like Alexander. Gone are the days when the communities are going to be removed from their places of residence without being consulted.
