DR Z PALLO JORDAN, MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM ANNOUNCES THE NEW BOARD OF SATOUR

On 27 March 1997, after receiving and reviewing a host of nominations from members of the public and the tourism industry, I have empannelled a new board of South African Tourism Bureau (SATOUR) who will be charged with the responsibility of giving our country's key tourism marketing body a new direction and focus.

The successful nominees are representative of the principal constituents for a winning tourism strategy and are drawn from business, the community, labour and key specialists in tourism.

The Ministry was fortunate in receiving a list of highly talented people from among whom to choose. While this made selection difficult, it also indicated to us the quality of persons involved in our tourism sector. The calibre of persons selected to serve will certainly enjoy the confidence of all involved in tourism. I am convinced that the Board I have selected will strengthen the relationship between government and those engaged in the tourism business as employers and employees. It is also charged with making the tourist industry more representative.

This new board assumes its responsibility after an extremely successful year which has increased the probability of raising the contribution tourism makes to our gross domestic product.

I want to take the opportunity to thank the members of the interim board for the magnificent contribution they have made to the growth and development of the industry over the past three years. I expect the new board to build on the firm foundation laid by the men and women who preceded them.

The new board members will serve for a term of three years.
