(STATEMENT RE INCIDENT INVOLVING POLICE RESERVIST AND MINISTER SYDNEY MUFAMADI)

Departmental charges are being investigated against a Police reservist after an incident involving Safety and Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi in Joubert Park, Johannesburg, last weekend.

These departmental charges relate to alleged conduct unbecoming by the reservist towards the Minister and alleged excessive use of force against a rape suspect.

These departmental steps may also result in criminal charges being formulated against the reservist in question.

According to available information, Minister Mufamadi - who reportedly wished to purchase newspapers - came across a group of police officials and a rape suspect on Saturday night.

In the opinion of the Minister, excessive force was being used against the suspect and he objected strenuously.

A verbal exchange then took place between the Minister and the reservist in question.
