CABINET MEETING - 19 MARCH 1997

The Cabinet held its regular fortnightly meeting in Tuynhuys, Cape Town. The meeting received in the main reports from the various Cabinet Committees.

The Cabinet received a report from the Department of Minerals and Energy on the Solar Home Systems (SHSs) and approved a single capital subsidy of R1 500 per SHS service point to provide electricity to households and public amenities in remote rural areas.

The Cabinet received a report that the Department of Labour had prepared a Green Paper: A Skills Development Strategy for Economic and Employment Growth in South Africa and approved its publication to elicit public comment.

The Cabinet received a report that the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting will host the 4th Assembly of the Regional African Satellite Communications Organisations (RASCOM). The Assembly will take place between 26 to 28 May 1997.

The Cabinet received a report from the Office of the Executive Deputy President on the National Development Agency (NDA) and approved the establishment of the NDA as a statutory funding body. The NDA would report to Parliament and be located in the Office of the Executive Deputy President.

The Cabinet adopted the White Paper on the Transformation of Health Sector: Towards a National Health System prepared by the Department of Health.

The Cabinet approved that the following Bills be tabled in Parliament during the current session:

1. Contingency Fees Bill, 1997; 2. Pharmacy Amendment Bill, 1997; and 3. Medical, Dental and Supplementary Health Profession Amendment Bill, 1997.
